How to Stay Motivated During Your Weight Loss Program
By: Darren Williger
While getting into a weight loss program might be easy, but it is extremely difficult to say tuned to the program and stick to it. Motivation goes down especially when you have suddenly reached a plateau or started to regain weight.
Sticking to a particular schedule in life requires tremendous motivation. Eating special diets and doing regular physical exercises may leave you frustrated after some time. How can we keep ourselves motivated enough not to give it up midway?
One of the first things to remember if you want to stay motivated is that success breeds success. Set realistic goals in your weight loss program. Once you have tasted success in reaching that desired goal, you will naturally get motivated to set yourself another target. If you set a high target, it is very likely that you will feel frustrated midway and want to give it all up thinking that success is not for you. Setting small and achievable goals in your weight loss program will automatically push you further to lose more weight by setting newer and more realistic targets.
The constant thoughts which should motivate you are what benefits are in store for you once you lose weight. Health-wise, you will be healthier warding off ailments like heart disease and diabetes; look-wise, you will look slimmer, be able to get into sexier clothes and get the admiration of people around you; family-wise, you can spend more quality time with your kids, as well as work more productively at home and office. Remember a slim and trim person has a better quality of life both inside and outsider his or her home.
Like giving up smoking, weight loss programs can also motivate you when you surround yourself with people who mean you good and who will constantly encourage you to reach your objectives. Share with them the news of those inches lost and reward your self for it too. Keep a small sum of money away so that every time you lose a pound you could do some activity which you truly enjoy doing. Giving your self a pat on the back on a job well done is self-motivation no doubt, but it keeps you happy and smiling also. Keep a weight chart in front of you and keep on recording your weight loss. This is visual motivation right in front of you. After all remember you are doing something for a healthier and worthier cause. You must feel happy at your will power and capability to stick to a decision.
Your daily physical workouts need not be a boring time. Listen to music on you walkman or iPod or watch TV while you are doing treadmill, stationery bike or crunches. Alter your exercising pattern to add some fun to it, if doing the same routine makes you bored. The feeling of well being which you feel immediately after a work out is your trigger to continue to do what you are doing.
And the weighing scale and encouragement from friends and family would keep you going for a long time. If you need external support, contact support groups, counselors or professional dieticians who can motivate you to continue with your program to lose weight.
Weight loss is easy for the first few pounds after which it seems to stabilize. This is the time when you need that extra push to remain motivated. This can come from outside or within. From whichever source you get it, you must keep at it somehow. If nothing works, try to get into your old pair of jeans. If they are longer hugging your skin, eureka! You have lost weight. This should motivate you enough.
