Everything You Wanted to Know about Hoodia

What exactly is Hoodia? It is a natural appetite suppressant originally from South Africa which has taken the weight watchers’ world by storm. It magically vanishes your appetite irrespective of whether you have eaten or not and is without any reported side effects. Who discovered this magic therapy and why has it become so popular?

To begin with Hoodia is nothing new. It was in existence almost 100,000 years ago when South African San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert consumed it to prevent hunger pangs during their long trek across the desert. Research conducted in South Africa’s national lab found weight loss in animals fed with Hoodia. It took 30 years to discover the molecule contained Hoodia and was labeled P57. This was also the time when it was patented to Phytopharm who further researched on the molecule.

Clinical trials conducted in December 2001 revealed that subjects, who were given Hoodia, consumed less than 1000 calories per day and did not suffer from any side effects. This was followed by pharmaceutical big wig Pfizer joining hands with Phytopharm for funding further research on the molecule. Unfortunately Pfizer backed out when it was found that the molecule could not be made in to a drug formulation. The main problem is that Hoodia can not be produced synthetically and in large quantities. Producing it in small quantities would not be economically feasible. Phytopharm have now decided to market Hoodia in the form of diet bars and shakes and their products are scheduled to hit the stores by 2008.

A plant similar to the cactus, Hoodia is from the gordonii variety of species, which survive only in extremely high temperatures and effective only in its natural form. Available only in Kalahari Desert, growing it in other simulated environments have not met with any success. Not only does it give the consumer a full feeling, it is also coupled with a feeling of well being along with a mild aphrodisiac effect. While some people take to it instantly, while it may take several weeks for it to act on others.

Introduced to the US in 2004, Hoodia is currently available in capsule, powder, liquid or tea form. You need to practice caution as what you buy in the name of Hoodia could be a complete fake. Only companies who guarantee its original source as a South African plant are genuine. While supplements containing at least 200 mg of Hoodia gordonii powder are considered to be effective, beware that children, pregnant women and breast feeding mothers should not consume this product.

While the weight watchers’ world further hypes Hoodia, remember that not much research has been done to assess its safety and side effect profile. Also, the Hoodia plant is under the endangered species list. Given that fact, how are these plants being exported? Food for thought indeed. Whatever you do, make sure you are having genuine Hoodia and not something which promises to be Hoodia.

How Miraculous are Weight Loss Supplements?

“One stop cure” is the other name for weight loss supplements which promise magical reduction of weight and near-instant trimming of the body. Is this a myth or can such magic remedies for obesity exist?
Advertisements bombard our senses of diet supplements which can put you back in shape in less time that you ever imagined. Many people who have succumbed to such advertising gimmicks have faced frustration and burnt their fingers (instead of calories!) with little or no alterations to their vital statistics. But all is not bad with diet supplements. There are some aspects of such magic diets, which are indeed commendable.

One of the reasons why these diet supplements have become so popular is because of their easy accessibility. Available with out any prescription, these supplements can be purchased by an and every one who wishes to lost those extra pounds. Some of the manufacturers even get away by claiming that the ingredients are all ‘natural’ products. Unfortunately these claims are not substantiated and are false. Firstly, anything that is ‘natural’ need not always be safe for the body. Moreover, the body quickly gets used to these ‘natural’ ingredients and even if the product had any beneficial effect, it takes no time to disappear also. In stead, if you can use these supplements for a short duration of time and back it up with adequate exercise, you might expect to get better results.

So how can a ‘natural’ plant extract become a health hazard? To begin with, none of these supplements are approved by the FDA. This is due to the lenience of DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) Act which allows any dietary supplement that has its origin in plant sources to be sold without any approval of FDA or any other similar governmental regulatory agency. The other issue is that there is no regulatory body which puts any mandatory labeling instructions or warnings of side-effects to be incorporated on the outer packaging. This makes any consumer completely unsure of the type of ingredients he or she is ingesting. Surely, a plant in its natural form is expected to be harmless. But who can guarantee the kind of molecular changes that might happen when you take out its extract and put it in a capsule or tablet form? In fact, the truth of the matter is that many of these ingredients are capable of causing a wide range of side effects especially when they interact with other drugs which a consumer might be taking already. This is how a perfectly ‘natural’ ingredient can become a health hazard.

Though FDA does not give its approval for these types of products, it can always withdraw them from the market, if there are any reported cases of it being hazardous to health. Needless to mention, this might be just a bit too late for some one who has already fallen victim to its multiple side effects.

These types of diet supplements will easily attract the attention of some one who is desperate to lose weight and they become the soft targets for the aggressive advertising campaigns which these products do. If you are one of those unfortunate overweight individuals whose health is getting affected negatively by weight issues, taking a prescription diet pill recommended by a doctor would be the way to go. in case you are looking for a quick way to solve your weight problem, you could try these supplements after taking adequate precautions, which include: checking with your doctor whether the ingredients have a chance of reacting negatively with any current medication that you are having; reading the labeling instructions carefully; doing enough research on the ‘natural’ ingredients and confirming their safety, side effects etc. Remember, losing weight can be easy if you take a healthy and balanced diet and back it up with adequate physical activity. This could be the safest option for losing weight.

The Truth about Diet Pills and Supplements

We are bombarded with ads promising to make us trim and slim without any effort – simply pop those magic pills and your appetite will vanish, your metabolism will increase and you can just about eat anything and still keep that hour-glass figure.

These natural diet pills or supplements seem to work like miracles. Endorsed by those slim and trim individuals who show their ‘before’ and ‘after’ bodies with pride and conviction, the pills and supplements are simply amazing. After all, the promises made by the manufacturers of the diet pills and supplements are definitely tempting. Who on earth would not like to have that desirable body, without having to starve, without having to exercise and without having to take any effort? But watch out. Just because the products are ‘natural’ does not mean they are safe and healthy.

Weight loss is one of the most important issues affecting both the mind and the body of an average American. The whole world seems to be obsessed by a slim and trim body. Otherwise why would Americans spend nearly $40 billion every year, just on products which promise a slim body? It is simply because most people do not have the will power to avoid his or her favorite food coupled with lack of time and inclination to go for workouts. So depend on the magic pill to do all the work for you, while you relax and enjoy life in your own terms.

The most important thing to observe before you pop in a diet pill or start depending on supplements is that since these brands are marketed as ‘natural’ products, the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) does not regulate it. This means that none of these products have been clinically tested for their efficacy as well as their long-term effects on the body. Their safety record is not established.

Calorie burners, appetite suppressants and carbohydrate blockers are some of the different categories in which diet pills and supplements can be classified under. Increment of metabolism is one of the claims made by calorie burners which in turn may result in increase in heart rate, which may turn into irregular beating of the heart, increase in blood pressure, nervousness, insomnia and depression. These adverse side effects are a result of the common ingredient that these products contain: ephedrine, which is methylamino-l phenyl-l propanol. This can either be a derivative of the ma-huang plant or could be made from combining several herbal combinations. Unfortunately, this ingredient is not only responsible for a host of illnesses, it may even cause death.

An appetite suppressant, as the name explains, on the other hand decreases our hunger levels and reduces our yearning for food. This in turn results in less consumption of calories which helps in weight loss. Since lower calories will result in reduced metabolism, the resulting lower metabolic rate will automatically result in losing weight. But the important thing to remember is that metabolic functions depend on the calorie intake which is transformed to energy to perform the basic body functions. This means that if we take lesser calories than is necessary to maintain our body functions, we might be harming the body in some way.

Fat and carbohydrate blockers bar the intestines from absorbing these elements. We must remember that there are many nutrients which are transported to our blood stream with the help of fat, so putting a clamp on such absorption may deplete the body of essential nutrients. Side effects of these types of diet pills or supplements include cramping, diarrhea and bloating.

Our bodies gradually gets used to these diet pills and supplements and the weight loss reaches its peak within 6 months of use. The after effect could mean regaining the lost pounds faster than you lost it. If weight loss is a priority in your agenda and you are aiming for one of these diet pills or supplements, remember to back it up with a healthy and balanced diet and lots of physical exercise. But before you begin your diet program, visit your health provider. He is the best person who can advise you on any expected adverse reaction or side effects caused due to the current medication that you are already taking.

In summary, it is important to remember that weight loss can not be achieved miraculously over night. It has to happen gradually with a strong commitment from your side. The process of weight loss is a combination of a healthy diet with a regular routine of physical work out. As a responsible adult, stop believing in those hyped claims of ‘natural’ products which reduce weight without any hard work or diet control. Control what you are eating in stead and how fast you can burn the calories which you have consumed. Remember, ‘natural’ need not always mean that they are safe as well.
