One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions for millions of people round the world is to lose those extra pounds. The world seems to be made up of two types of people: ones who are on a diet and the other waiting to go on a diet.
The key objective of losing weight is to consume lesser calories than you burn. This can be achieved through a balanced diet combined with some amount of physical activity. Essentially there are three types of weight loss programs: do-it-yourself program, non-clinical and clinical programs.
The do-it-yourself weight loss program, as the name suggests, is one where you are in complete control of your diet plan as well as your workout schedules. The diet plan can be worked out through books, online help or available videos. The physical activity program also can be chalked out with the help of video classes plus walking or jogging routines, attending aerobic or other exercise classes. There is a support group called Overeaters Anonymous who can also lend support, if you want it. This group is not equipped to suggest any diet or exercise plan but can lend your moral support during your weight losing process. This type of support groups are good for people who do not need any counseling on nutrition or exercise but simply needs some emotional and psychological support.
There are a lot of non-clinical programs available for those who want to lose weight by joining private or commercial programs. Examples of these include: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and LA Weight Loss. These programs will usually include a counselor who will meet you regularly, monitor your progress, and do the usual weigh-ins to keep you on track. They will advise you on a balance diet and physical workout schedules based on your personal medical record and body type. While diets are advised by professional dieticians the counselors are not necessarily health professionals but usually past program members. These counselors often make it nearly mandatory to buy their supplements, nutrition bars or pre-packaged meals. In case you decide to opt for these types of programs, make sure that you have your doctor check the ingredients of these pre-packaged meals or supplements. Beware of programs which promise you rapid weight loss without having to do any physical exercise. These could prove to be hazardous in the long run. The non-clinical weight loss programs are excellent for people who are constantly looking for personal attention for monitoring their weight loss progress and needs constant counseling support.
The clinical weight loss programs, again as the name suggests, take place in a clinical environment where you are advised nutritional diet, physical workouts and behavioral change therapy by medical practitioners. You could get prescription for weight loss drugs, extremely low calorie diet plans from these clinics. For morbidly obese clients, these clinics may also suggest surgical intervention. These types of programs are good for people whose obesity is interfering with their overall health and whose weight problem is due to hereditary reasons.
Whichever weight loss program you opt for, the best thing to do is to seek the advice of your doctor. You must be careful of the hidden costs behind supplements and pre-packaged meals and be completely sure of the side effects of the ingredients contained in the supplements. In case you are extremely overweight, seeking medical help is the best choice. Lastly, remember weight loss does not end when you have reached your desired body weight. The crux of the matter lies in your ability to maintain that weight with a properly balanced nutritious diet plan and carefully chalked out physical exercise routine. Otherwise those extra pounds which you lost with so much determination will come back with a vengeance.
